22nd Annual Jazz Reggae Festival  +intro

October 17, 2008

With my first motion graphics piece, I tried to give 30,000 concert-goers a deeper look into the music they came to listen and dance to.

The message: JazzReggae isn’t just music, it’s always been more - it’s the melding of cultures, the triumph over struggle, and the voice of social justice.

No four minute video can give this topic what it deserves, but I’m happy as long as viewers walk away with at least a slightly greater appreciation for the music they love - Jazz and Reggae.

  1. hey Chris.. I never knew you did all this stuff- but it’s simply amazing. huge props man

  2. great job on the intro! I’m still learning motion graphics, but very inspired.

  3. So you came up with the idea of the notes turning into birds? When you develop something like this, are you coming up with every concept or did the client give you certain visuals that you had to use.

    Just love those birds…

  4. Thanks so much for the kind words, with this project I handled everything from concepting to execution. The gave me a pretty simple brief and from there, I came up with the messaging and then wrote a script with visual ideas and music cues included.

And the visuals came entirely from me and my team of artists…but those birds were definitely mine haha, glad you liked them!

  5. I’m in the UCLA Film School, and we use After Effects and Flash a lot, for this project did you use both programs or just AE? It seems like you used the 3D camera feature in AE here, but was the animation done in Flash?

  6. Hey Ella,

I actually did all the animation on After Effects, unfortunately I don’t really know Flash. I learned pretty much everything I know about After Effects from http://www.videocopilot.net, you should check it out if you haven’t already. Andrew Kramer is a genius!
